Farming

Farming and Herding

Background

The life of the farmer or shepherd on Sosaria can be a difficult one, full of hardships. But it brings its own rewards – for there is nothing more peaceful and relaxing to the shepherd than sitting alone on the hills, tending his sheep, and nothing more rewarding than bringing in a harvest. This guide is dedicated to the skill of Farming and Herding, and aims to help you get the most out of all aspects of the Agriculture system.

The Agriculture System

Currently, this is divided up as follows:

  • Herding
  • Growing crops
  • Milking
  • Beekeeping
  • Cheese Making
  • Butter Production

Each part of this has its own tools and items, as explained below:

Herding

Tools required: Crook.

Other items required: None.

Known special items: Guardian Crook (summons rabbits instead of herding)

  • To herd an animal, double click the crook and target the animal. Your chance of herding is roughly equal to the chance a tamer would have of taming that creature.
  • You can make an animal walk anywhere when herding by clicking on the ground.
  • You can make an animal follow you by targeting yourself.
  • You can only herd tame animals if you control them.
  • To stop a herded animal from following you, target the animal and direct it to walk somewhere.

Growing Crops

Tools required: None.

Other items required: Crop Seeds

Known special items: None.

  • You can only plant seeds in dirt and ploughed fields.
  • Crop Seeds, unlike the flower seeds, do not need watering.
  • Crops grow quickly, and can usually be harvested within one or two Sosarian days.
  • When planting crops, your Herding and Farming skill determines whether the crop will grow, or if you will just get weeds.
  • Crops are harvested by double-clicking, except for sugar cane. This needs to be cut with a knife.
  • You can only harvest a crop a certain number of times before it withers away.
  • Both crops and weeds can be uprooted.
  • Mushroom farms are an add-on to allow the growing of mushrooms. Finding an edible mushroom checks your Wilderness skill.

Seeds

Milking

Tools required: Milk bucket.

Other items required: None.

Known special items: None.

·        You can milk cows, sheep or goats.

·        A bucket can only be used for one type of milk. When it is first used, the milk type is set.

·        Milk can be poured into empty bottles, which can be labelled with the Inscription button (no skill required), butter churns for butter, or Cheese Forms for Cheesemaking.

Milking a Goat

Beekeeping

Tools required: None.

Other items required: Beehive (Rare item).

Known special items: Bee Cure Potion.

·        Double-click a locked-down beehive to start the bees producing.

·        As the bees work, they will slowly produce honey and wax. Double-clicking the hive will collect this.

·        When bees are sick, they won’t produce. Sick bees can be cured with a Bee Cure Poison

Cheese

To make cheese, the following items are required:

  • A full bucket of milk (sheep, goat or cow).

  • A cheese form.

Fill the form with milk, then double click it to start fermentation. After this point, double-clicking the form will reveal how far the fermentation has progressed.

Once the fermentation is complete, double-click the form to extract the cheese.

There are two types of cheeses

  • Standard Cheese – Cow, Sheep or Goat. These are always good, delicious cheeses. They can be used in cooking, or eaten individually.

  • Magic Cheese – these have a variety of temporary stat bonuses, and come in a variety of colours. No-one is quite sure how magic cheese comes into being, but it is believed that the underlying magic in the environment can have strange effects on the fermenting milk. Ancient texts found in Terort Skitas speak of a terrifying Cheese Elemental, and how it came to a sticky end at the hands of a fire elemental summoned to defeat it – but in modern times none have seen such a bizarre being.

Magic Cheese

Butter

As with Cheese, butter requires the following:

  • A full bucket of milk (sheep, cow, or goat).

  • A butter churn.

Fill the churn with milk, then double-click it to start tumbling. After this point, double-clicking the pat will reveal how close the butter is to being completed. Once it is ready, double-clicking the churn extracts the butter. Regardless of the milk used, there is only ever one type of butter created. Butter cannot be eaten, but can be used in cooking.

·        Butter "ingots" cannot be used to make butter armour, as has been suggested. Armour made from butter is not only impractical, but also frankly ridiculous. Even if you could, who would be foolish enough to wear it? It melts, it gets all sticky and horrible, and horde minions try to lick it off you.

Types of crops

There are a variety of crops, both fruit and vegetable. These can be sold, eaten, or used in Cookery. The chart below lists the type of crop, the availability of the seed, the yield of the crop (if known), and any known uses for the produce.
