Catching "Ess"

The Art of Fishing

Background

The humble fisherman has, at times, a job many would envy. Each of us imagines the fisherman, sitting on the side of a riverbank or on a ship, enjoying the sun and dozing gently while waiting for a bite. This idyllic image rarely takes into account such hazards as storms, sea serpents and pirates – for some times, the fish biting is only the start of the problem.

Fishing, By Jayahr Hartlii

The best place to fish, when you first start out, is the riverbank. As a highly skilled fisherman, I remember well the early days, sitting amid a growing pile of boots on the sure and praying for a fish. That first fish, when it finally bites, can make up for weeks of damp footwear and chips. As your skill progresses, you may want to invest in a ship, and sail out to find bigger and better catches. The pinnacle of the fisherman’s life is pulling up a big fish – there are many different types, and always the hope that yours will be the biggest!

Sho(r)e Fishing

Tools required: Fishing Rod

Other items required: None.

Known special items: None

  • To fish, double-click your rod and target the water. You will cast your line into the water.
  • After a while, depending on your fishing skill, you may catch something. You will instantly pull your line in.
  • Your catch will be deposited in your backpack. In most cases, it will be a fish. At other times, it may be shoes, or an unusual shore fish of some sort.

Sea Fishing

Tools required: Fishing Rod

Other items required: Ship

Known special items: Message in a Bottle, Fishing Net

  • Sea fishing needs to take place some way from the shore. Repeat the principles behind shore fishing.
  • Unlike shore fishing, Deep Sea fishing can be quite dangerous – you have a chance to catch Sea Serpents and, occasionally, Deep Sea Serpents. However, both of these have a chance to drop either a Message in a Bottle or a Special Fishing Net.
  • Messages in Bottles give chests, which require 80 fishing skill to pull up.
  • All MiB chests come without the monster spawn of their land-based counterparts
  • Sea Fishing is also possible over reefs (qv).
  • Ships can be damaged or can decay. When fully damaged, a ship will sink.

Deep Sea Fishing

Tools required: Special Fishing Net.

Other items required: Ship

Known special items: Message in a Bottle, Fishing Net

·        Double click net and target water. The net will sink.

·        A few moments later, the net will emerge with a mass of deep sea monsters – serpents, deep see serpents, even kraken.

·        Kraken can have rope, which is needed for the construction of ships.

Reef Fishing

Tools required: Fishing Rod.

Other items required: Ship

Known special items: Coral.

·        Some times, while out fishing, you’ll find yourself over a reef. These areas can be easily identified as you start to pull coral out instead of boots.

·        Coral fishing can produce a wide variety of tropical fish, up to the marlin and shark in size.

·        When fishing on a Reef, there is a chance of spawning a monster. These vary, but are usually small monsters like the Sea Monkey or Aquabat. Very rarely, you could pull up a merwyrm.

Big Fish

The Big Fish is the ultimate challenge for the fisherman. They come in many different names and weights, but they can all be mounted as a trophy using a taxidermy kit. The biggest challenge a fisherman will face is catching the biggest fish he possibly can…
